The student union’s main purpose is to monitor studies.
This is regulated by Section 9 of the Higher Education Act and is stated as follows.
A student union shall have as its main purpose to monitor and participate in the development of education and the conditions for studies at the university. Act (2009:766).
The study political work of Gotland student union Rindi can be briefly summarized at the following levels.
Locally
Local monitoring primarily involves program- or department-specific working groups that continuously evaluate the quality of the programs through study monitoring and represent the students with a mandate for decision-making.
Local student representatives are appointed individually by the sections.
Faculty/Campus
Campus monitoring involves faculty- or campus-specific working groups that address, among other things, students’ study environment, student services and health, exchange programs, as well as broader study-related issues in a similar manner to local policy.
Student representatives for the faculty are appointed by the board following negotiations with other relevant student unions.
Student representatives for overarching campus matters are appointed by the board.
The student representative for matters concerning international students on campus is the International Secretary.
University
University-level monitoring involves working groups that cover the entire Uppsala University. Through the collaborative body Uppsala University Student Unions (UUFS), the unions jointly pursue a common policy towards the university. Monitoring at the university level is most commonly referred to as central study monitoring.
Central student representatives are appointed by UUFS and, under the union’s mandate, by the board.
National
National politics includes study politics directed towards the government, the parliament, and Swedish authorities. Through the collaborative body Sweden’s National Union of Students (SFS), 58 student unions jointly pursue a common policy towards the state.
The union is also part of the coalition Collaborating Students (SamS), which consists of student unions of similar size, working together to coordinate common policies towards SFS.
The representatives consist of elected members of the board.
